Janet Mendel is an American journalist who has lived in Spain for more than 30 years. As a freelancer, she writes about food, travel, people and events for newspapers, magazines and travel guides worldwide. For many years she was a contributor and monthly columnist for Lookout, an English-language magazine in Spain (since disappeared). Her work also has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Cooking Light, Foods From Spain News, The Rotarian, Spain Gourmetour, and other publications. She contributed to both the Insight Guide to Southern Spain and the Eyewitness Guide to Seville and Andalusia.

An authority on the cooking of Spain, Janet Mendel is the author of six books. Cooking in Spain, Tapas and More Great Dishes From Spain and Shopping for Food and Wine in Spain are all published by Santana Books, Spain. The Best of Spanish Cooking, no longer in print in English, is published in German by Santana Books. Traditional Spanish Cooking, published by Garnet, U.K., won the prestigious André Simon food book award in Britain and was short-listed for the 1997 Glenfiddich cookbook award.

Janet Mendel´s newest book, My Kitchen in Spain--225 Authentic Regional Recipes, published in 2002 by HarperCollins-U.S., received excellent reviews and was featured on cookbook pick-lists by Food & Wine magazine and the New York Times.

Janet Mendel has appeared on radio and television programs in the U.S., including a segment for Planet Food, filmed in her kitchen in Spain, which aired on the Food Network. She also has presented cooking classes on Spanish food at cooking schools in the United States.

She served as moderator for seminars at the 2002 Worlds of Flavor Conference at the Culinary Institute of America in Greystone, California, and has been a panelist and speaker for events sponsored by the International Olive Oil Council.

Availability

Janet Mendel is available for writing assignments, TV food programs, and as lecturer, presenter and consultant. She is willing to travel anywhere in the world. Fees are negotiable.
