An Andalusian Experience

The Costa's Best Bet
New racecourse in Mijas is a strong added attraction for the Costa del Sol.

Nothing like the thunder of hooves on turf to get the adrenaline pumping, especially if you have money on the winning horse. Now, with the opening of a full-scale racecourse in Mijas on the Costa del Sol, horse racing is set to become a powerful added attraction to Europe’s favourite holiday destination.

The building of the Hipodromo Costa del Sol, the first new racecourse to open in Spain in 25 years, is the culmination of a dream long cherished by the inhabitants of the picturesque village of Mijas, which is already one of Andalusia’s most popular travel destinations.
The Hipodromo Costa del Sol has two concentric tracks, with floodlighting for night-time racing, and a grandstand for 5,000 spectators, in addition to trackside seating for another 5,000. The circuit is the focal point of what will be a full leisure resort which also includes a show jumping field, track-and-field stadium and a five-star hotel. The track’s main incentive for racehorse owners - aside from the prize money, the highest in Spain - is the fact that its season lasts throughout the winter, when most European tracks are closed down because of the weather. The Mijas racing season runs from October to the end of May. Racing apart, the Hipodromo Costa del Sol provides excellent winter stabling facilities for racehorses from northern Europe. Also available are riding courses, both for beginners and for aspiring jockeys.

The location couldn’t be better. The new track is only fifteen minutes from the Malaga international airport, and within easy reach of the beaches, hotels and golf courses of Mijas and Marbella. Overlooking the Mediterranean, it also has to be the racecourse with the best views in the world.
The Hipodromo Costa del Sol comes in addition to the Real Club Pineda in Seville, which has a shorter season of races in winter. A third horse racing circuit is under construction in Dos Hermanas, near Seville. The Costa del Sol racecourse will handle off-track betting for the Dos Hermanas racecourse as well.
